 Student Becomes HSBC Taipan

Not every 17-year-old can say they've been CEO of one of the largest banks in the world, even if only for a few hours. Andrea Wai-Man Wong, a Form Six student at Holy Trinity College, can.

Andrea won the "CEO of the Year" award in the HSBC-sponsored Company Programme 2005-2006 for her leadership as CEO of the "Check This Out" company, which made and sold home accessories. Andrea won an invaluable opportunity to job shadow Vincent Cheng, HSBC Chairman Asia-Pacific and Michael Smith, HSBC President and CEO Asia-Pacific, for a half-day each on 6 July and 19 July respectively.

During the two half-days, Mr Cheng and Mr Smith took Andrea to their workplaces, where they went through a typical business day. Andrea said: "It was an honor to have an opportunity to look at the two HSBC's senior executives closely and recognise how they worked in a busy day. Although it was a short period of time, the experience to job shadow HSBC's Chairman and CEO will undoubtedly influence on my attitude towards senior management, my career and my life."

The Company Programme 2005-2006 was organised by Junior Achievement Hong Kong and was sponsored by HSBC. The annual programme is an entrepreneurial education scheme designed to provide an opportunity for young people in Hong Kong to learn the value of teamwork and leadership by creating companies that produce and market real products.
